Digitalization has been changing our lifestyle and life in general at unprecedented speed. The world is getting smarter with touch screens everywhere, from the big information displays in the shopping mall, in-vehicle infotainment systems, to all sorts of ticket machines. To entertain the increasingly higher consumer expectations, new display technologies are being developed to enable smart windows in vehicles for premium passenger experience.

Various use cases of smart windows
You are on an airplane. Sun shines brightly through the cabin window. Instead of putting down a physical blind and blocking all the sunlight, now you have the option to dim the window according to your need by touching the control button on the smart window. When space is limited and extremely valuable, incorporating the control function into the window is a brilliant and sometimes the only solution. On the train, information such as train speed, the current stop, the next stop and estimated time of arrival, and the final destination and ETA, can all be displayed on the side window and accessible to passengers at all time.
Smart windows become especially useful when the era of shared economy is arriving. Looking for your ordered shared car among hundreds of cars in the parking slot can be frustrating. To check the color and plate number of the car? Or what if your name appears brightly on the car window? When it comes to unlocking a shared car, you probably would not want to get a physical key from somewhere first. After all, convenience is the key to the sharing economy among other benefits. Using a mobile app? But what if your phone is out of battery? Things happen. Now with smart windows, you can simply unlock the car by typing the code directly on the window in front of you.
There are many other applications of in-glass displays for vehicles, such as displaying charging status on the side window of an electric car, showing pricing information on a taxi side window, or controlling the roof window.
Keep it simple
Physical control panels are gradually being replaced by screens. But we are not suggesting to add yet another entertaining screen in vehicles. Too many colorful displays with numerous information everywhere are distracting. Simplicity sometimes works better. By displaying the most critical information in the most suitable place allows what NEEDS to be seen to stand out and serves its purpose.
